Room for One More Blog

A park bench offers a place to meet, a place to converse, a place to read, a place to eat, a place to listen to music, even just a place to sit and embrace the fresh air. Acting as a symbol of rest and recovery, it can be used in a multitude of ways, more than what meets the eye. Whether it’s to escape from the world and take time for yourself or to connect and take time to be with others, the often understated park bench works best in its simplicity. It is neither exclusive nor rivalrous, free, and accessible to all.

In the context of the environment, a simple park bench is a central building block to both urban, and rural, outdoor spaces. It is important to recognise that these places are not just for the gram, or a means to get from A to B, they are quite literally blank canvasses in themselves. It is easy to get lost in the fast-paced, hundred miles an hour society in which we find ourselves, so taking a moment to reflect and step back is nothing to be ashamed about. Other things can wait. You and your mental health cannot.

Our podcast, ‘Room for One More’, just like the outdoor spaces themselves, centres around the idea of a park bench, exploring the theme of mental health in this most honest of natural settings. So next time you find yourself in your local park and you so happen to come across a park bench, trust me there’s plenty, ask yourself this, is there room for one more?.... the answer is always yes…. as long as you are two metres apart of course.
